Recent topic of conversation: Einstein's Theory of Relativity
While Chris is re-reading Einstein's Theory of Relativity, I have been delving back into some of my favorite artists' work. One of whom is Salvador Dali. Our latest topic of conversation (being Einstein) reminded me of Dali's paintings: The Persistence of Memory & The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory. Enjoy.

My Walking Art Update
As you all know, I'm a big fan of art and especially that done by local artists. Today I have a few pieces to share with you that are being shown at the Patricia Rovzar Gallery in Downtown Seattle. Both of these artists are local and their works are wonderfully pleasing. Lyle Silver's use of color in these landscapes is extraordinary and Pierce Milholland has a spectacular sense of light and color in his fantastic paintings of the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy.

The Jon Hamar Trio has been named Seattle's 2007 Emerging Jazz Artist of the year. This would be a great opportunity to hear them play in an intimate venue just prior to the Earshot Jazz Festival. This event is free with museum admission. Let me know if you're interested as I have a few guest passes.

"Welcome to The Drowsy Chaperone, the new musical comedy that is swooping into town with tons of laughs and the most 2006 Tony Awards of any musical on Broadway! It all begins when a die-hard musical fan plays his favorite cast album, a 1928 smash hit called "The Drowsy Chaperone," and the show magically bursts to life. "S'abadeb—The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists is a major exhibition that explores the unique artistry and culture of Salish First Peoples of Washington State and British Columbia. The exhibition features more than 175 works of art from national and international collections that offer a glimpse into the daily and ceremonial lives of the 39 sovereign Salish Nations. Many of the works have never before been on view and are, for the first time, interpreted by Native voices."

Award-winning author of "The Way Things Work", David Macaulay uses detailed drawings to take us on an entertaining, visual journey through the human body. Macaulay will be talking about and signing his new book "The Way We Work".
October 27th (6:00pm) @ Lark Restaurant: David Tanis: A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes
This is a "Cooks & Books" event where David Tanis will prepare a meal for attendees and will talk about his book in an intimate environment.
"A good cook knows the pleasure of a seasonal kitchen. Eating seasonally is eating sustainably, supporting local farmers, and preserving the land, but it has everything to do with pleasure as well. "A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes" offers simple dishes for easy entertaining that perfectly illustrate the idea of eating with the seasons. Tanis shows readers how to slow down, pay attention and give ingredients their due. He serves up charming, unassuming meals for friends and family. Tanis's essays, personal stories and anecdotes are interesting, friendly and soulful. By the end, readers will have learned the inspiration, techniques and joy of the kitchen that are just as important as the best ingredients."

I hadn't heard of this organization or their events prior to receiving this brochure and I'm very impressed by the topics covered, the speakers, poets, etc. they're bringing in to town for series' of lectures, poems, and special events. Inspiring Impressionists....
I went over to the Seattle Art Museum last night to visit the new exhibition: Inspiring Impressionists.
It was fantastic! The SAM has brought in an amazing collection from these artists. They've done a wonderful job at grouping/pairing the paintings. You'll be in for a real treat.

Inspiring Impressionism: The Impressionists and the Art of the Past will shed new light on one of art history’s most important movements when it opens at the Seattle Art Museum on June 19, 2008. The first comprehensive survey to explore the influence of Old Master artists on Impressionist painters, this groundbreaking exhibition will pair masterpieces by Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Édouard Manet, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas with those by artists Frans Hals, Francisco Goya and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, among others.
Inspiring Impressionism features nearly 100 works, including paintings and works on paper, drawn from more than 70 museums and private collections, some of which have never traveled to the United States. Organized by the Denver Art Museum, Inspiring Impressionism opened in Atlanta at the High Museum of Art (Oct. 16, 2007 through January 13, 2008) and subsequently traveled to the Denver Art Museum (February 23 through May 25, 2008), before its last stop at SAM. The national tour of Inspiring Impressionism is made possible by Northern Trust.
“Inspiring Impressionism offers audiences a fresh viewpoint on the Impressionist painters,” says Mimi Gates, Director of the Seattle Art Museum. “It reveals exciting new scholarship about the origins of this important period in art history.”
Inspiring Impressionism explores the ways in which these late 19th-century artists carried on a dialogue with their predecessors, while simultaneously creating the innovative style depicting modern life that came to be known as “Impressionism”. Exhibition highlights include traditional landscapes, still lifes and portraits by Old Masters such as Jean-Antoine Watteau, François Boucher, and Claude Lorrain that are shown with Impressionist works such as Monet’s Summer (1874) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Confidences (ca. 1873).
Pairings like Mary Cassatt’s The Family (1893) and Bernardino Luini’s Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John (ca. 1515-20) will show an Impressionist updating and secularization of traditional religious subject matter. The examination of Édouard Manet’s The Little Cavaliers, (copy after the original in the Louvre by the workshop of Velázquez) (ca.1859-1860) and Degas’ Visit to a Museum (ca.1879-90) will present a direct working dialogue between the Impressionists and Old Masters—a relationship often developed through artists’ study at the Musée du Louvre.
Other highlights of Inspiring Impressionism include Cézanne’s large-scale Still Life with Statuette (1894-5), a painting whose focal point is a reproduction of a 17th-century plaster sculpture of a putto. The sculpture will also be on view along with Cézanne drawings featuring the same subject. Several exquisite drawings by Degas were copied from drawings by Raphael and other Renaissance masters, reinforcing Degas’ assertion that “No art is less spontaneous than mine. What I do is the result of reflection and the study of the Old Masters.”

This Saturday: West Edge Chalk Walk
If you haven't been to the Chalk Walk, you're missing out. And the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend!
This Saturday from 11:00-4:00 in the West Edge neighborhood is the annual West Edge Chalk Walk. There's live music, chalk competitions for kids and adults, discounts at local stores, etc.

through the eye of the Holga
These photos struck my fancy. They're interesting and unassuming. They're taken by a toy camera called a Holga. Apparently there are many folks who fell in love with the light leaks and discolorations. I'd love to get my hands on one of these toy cameras and see what the world looks like through one of Holga's lenses.
