Duck Dodge 5-26!

We went sailing last night on Lake Union with Tantivy and her crew. Chris worked foredeck and I was the photographer for the evening. It's weird not working on the boat, but it's fun playing with the camera :)

Puget Sound Sailing

We went on a 25 mile race Saturday around the Puget Sound. It was our first time racing on saltwater and it was wonderful. I always feel at home around the smell of saltwater, the barks of the seals, the ferries rolling by. Mermaid life sure would be fun. Anyway....

I didn't have the camera out for the race, but I got a few shots through the locks. We waited on the lake side of the locks for about 45 minutes to an hour before getting let through and while we were hanging out there, we were serenaded by the sound of splashing salmon. I'd say about two jumps every second everywhere around us. Apparently they jump to get the lice off. At any rate, being next to the fish ladder at the locks in July, August, and September proves to be quite the site. I tried getting pictures of the fish in the air, but failed. You can see some splashes in a couple pictures, but that's about it. Looks like I need a camera upgrade....

Looking back at the lake - it was 8:00 am

See some splashes?

There's a few more splashes out there.

Sleepy, but happy.

Last Duck Dodge

We went sailing on Lake Union last night for [my] last week of Duck Dodge this year. Took 2nd. We officially took 1st, 2nd, or 3rd all season! It sure has been an adventure. Between Toga Night, a wedding on board, a band playing on the front of a yacht, almost hitting houseboats during the after party, and plenty other close calls, we haven't had any lack of entertainment. But the best part has been the camaraderie and learning experience. We finally know what the jib, genoa, and spinnaker are, and we have learned what side of the ropes to stand on while "jiving", "tacking" and the like to avoid getting thrown off the boat.... yes, there were a few close ones here too.

We officially have the "sailing bug". So, we'll see you on the water! Onward and Upward to Winter sailing ;)

Life on a Sailboat

We're seriously considering life on a Sailboat. We have a few years to work out the logistics even though that seems like a lifetime! I'd like to ask if any of you know anyone who lives on a boat, if you could please link their blog or send me their info. I have many questions to be answered and the more people we can talk to, the better. I'm especially interested in finding out about work on the boat or at port, raising children, pets?, etc.

Thanks!

Friday Night Sailing

We took Syd sailing Friday night on Lake Washington. We left Lake Union at about 5:30 to make it under the University Bridge and Montlake Cut on time. We BBQ'd on the boat between bridges. We had burgers, bacon wrapped dates, smoked salmon and wine.... gourmet sailing :)

We raced on Lake Washington and took first in our class. Tantivy is about 3rd overall in the Lake Washington race. It's accumulative over about 10 weeks through the summer.

Sydney had a wonderful time on the boat. She didn't even blink when we were tipping (as sailboats do). She was our Tactition and enjoyed every minute of it. The bridges may have been her favorite part :)

Many thanks to Stuart & Pam, and the crew of Tantivy for all your help and for inviting us rookies to join you.
